How to Get Rid of Chipmunks
Chipmunks are typically harmless to humans, but they can become a nuisance when they cause damage around your property. Before taking steps to remove them, decide whether their presence is truly problematic for you and your family.
In some cases, chipmunks may cause enough damage to your yard, garden, or structures to warrant removal. If their burrowing undermines foundations or their digging constantly uproots your plants, it may be time to take action.
Exclusion Methods for Chipmunk Control
One of the most effective ways to prevent chipmunk damage is through exclusion—keeping them out of areas where they cause problems.
- Use hardware cloth to protect gardens and flower beds. Bury it several inches below ground and extend it two to three feet above the surface. This creates a durable barrier that chipmunks will find difficult to penetrate.
- Seal openings around your home with fine wire mesh. Secure it tightly over any holes, vents, or gaps that chipmunks could use to enter.
Chipmunk Trapping
If chipmunks continue to be a nuisance, trapping may be necessary.
- Cage traps with fine mesh work well when baited with peanut butter, fruit, nuts, or seeds.
- Live traps and snare traps can also be effective tools for removing chipmunks humanely.
However, due to the extensive burrow systems chipmunks create, trapping them can be time-consuming and costly. Professional wildlife removal technicians have the expertise and equipment to safely and effectively target burrowing rodents.
